Creating a galaxy background can be time consuming depending on the medium you are using, but it is worth it for the fabulous end result. This card was done using layers of watercolors and a fitting sentiment from Compliments Vol. 2.
Before I begin painting I like to tape my watercolour paper of choice to a flat board to help prevent buckling or warping. This also makes for a nice clean edge once your panel is totally dry. I used lots of water and little paint, making sure my colours bled into each other, blotting away some mucky spots with a paper towel if needed. The first layer I let dry naturally but after that I used a heat gun to speed up the process. I am NOT patient. All in all, there about five layers of watercolour on here, each time making sure my colours were not overly saturated but at the same time bright enough to see. There are no rules to galaxy backgrounds. What looks great for me might be a sloppy mess for you! I stopped when I liked it and literally said out loud, “NO MORE.” Once totally dry I added white acrylic paint flecks across the surface, then peeled the tape off from around the edges. That part is SO satisfying!
The sentiment was heat embossed in white on black cardstock and I added some clear shimmer all across it then adhered it with foam tape. Silver star sequins were added here and there and the entire thing was glued to an A2 card base.
So what are some EASIER or other ways of creating a galaxy background? Distress Inks (regular or oxide) would work fabulously for either watercoloring or regular ol’ ink blending! Copic markers (time consuming but doable)? Galaxy patterned washi tape? Patterned paper? Why didn’t I think of patterned paper!? That would have saved me so much time lol! No matter what you choose, have fun with it. Creating shouldn’t be stressful. TRUST me; even if you don’t love the end result, someone else will.
